How to recover a lost driver’s license in Miami
Losing your Miami driver’s license can be frustrating, especially when you use it as your primary identification or rely on it for work. However, the process to obtain a duplicate is quite simple if you follow the right steps. In this article I will guide you, step by step, to recover your lost license without hassle.
As a Guatemalan living in Miami, I have gone through similar situations, and I want to share what I have learned, both from my personal experience and from official information, to help you solve this problem quickly and efficiently.
Step 1: Report the loss or theft of your license
The first step I recommend is to report the loss or theft of your driver’s license. Although it is not always required, it is a good step to take if you think someone may be misusing your license.
Personally, when I lost my license, I was concerned that someone might use it to impersonate me, so I decided to report it to the local police station.
This report can protect you if fraudulent use of your information occurs later. You can file the report online through the Miami-Dade Police Department ‘s website or go in person to a police station near you.
Step 2: Gather the necessary documents
To apply for a duplicate license, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) requires you to present certain documents that prove your identity and Florida residency. These are the documents you will need:
- Proof of identity: This can be your passport, birth certificate or, if you are a permanent resident, your Green Card.
- Social Security Number: If you have a Social Security number, make sure you have the card or an official document that includes it, such as a tax return, on hand.
- Proof of Florida residency: You will need two documents proving your Miami address, such as utility bills or a lease agreement.
Step 3: Request a duplicate online or at a DMV office
There are two ways to get your replacement driver’s license: online or in person at a DMV office. Below, I explain both options.
Option 1: Online application
Applying for a duplicate license online is the fastest method, and I used it myself the last time I lost my license. Through the FLHSMV website, you can complete the process in just a few minutes:
- Access the official FLHSMV website.
- Look for the “Replace Driver’s License” option.
- Complete the requested fields with your personal information.
- Pay the corresponding fee.
Once you have completed the process, you will receive your new license within 7 to 10 business days. This is definitely the best option if you don’t have time to visit a DMV office.
Option 2: Application at a DMV field office
If you prefer to apply in person or do not qualify to apply online (for example, if you have already applied for several duplicates in the past), you can go to a DMV office. It is recommended that you make an appointment in advance to avoid long waits. During your appointment, be sure to bring the documents mentioned above.
You will be given a temporary license to use while you wait for your new license to arrive in the mail. Also, if you have any problems with the documents, DMV employees will help you correct them on the spot.
Step 4: Pay the replacement fee
The cost to replace a driver’s license in Miami is $25 USD, whether you do it online or in person. If you filed a police report for the theft of your license, you may be exempt from paying this fee. In my case, the theft was clear, so the police report allowed me to save this fee. Be sure to bring a copy of the report with you when you apply for the waiver.
You can pay the fee by credit or debit card online, or in cash if you process at a DMV office.
Step 5: Receive your new license
If you applied online or in person, your new license will arrive by mail to your address in 7 to 10 business days. If for some reason you do not receive your license within that timeframe, I suggest you contact the FLHSMV for follow-up.
If you applied for the duplicate in person, you will receive a temporary license on the spot, which will allow you to continue driving while you wait for the definitive one.
What to do if you lose your license outside of Miami?
If you lose your license while outside the state of Florida, you can also apply for a duplicate license online, but the new license will only be sent to an in-state address.
This happened to me once during an out-of-state trip, and I solved the problem by asking a friend in Miami to receive the license for me and send it to me later.
Consider obtaining a license that complies with the REAL ID Act.
If you don’t already have a REAL ID-compliant license, now is a good time to apply. As of October 2025, you will need a REAL ID license to fly within the United States or enter federal buildings.
To obtain a REAL ID, you will need to present some additional documents, such as:
- Proof of name and date of birth (can be your passport or birth certificate).
- Proof of legal residence in the U.S.
- Documents verifying your address in Florida.
