Luis’ Journey to the Realization of his American Dream
Luis Hernández is a name that, although common, hides an extraordinary story of struggle, self-improvement and success.
When Luis arrived in the United States, he was still a child. He grew up and was educated here, considering this country his home.
He had obtained Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status as a teenager, which initially allowed him to work legally and live without the constant fear of deportation. However, like many legal protections, DACA is not permanent and requires periodic renewals.
Luis’ story took a decisive turn thanks to his interaction with the Guatemalan consulate in Los Angeles. Luis remembers:
“I knew the road would not be easy, but I also understood that I was not alone. The consulate became my beacon of hope.”
The thought of losing what he had achieved so far filled Luis with anxiety. I knew that the DACA renewal process could be complicated and fraught with uncertainty due to political and legislative changes.
DACA Renewal
One of the crucial moments for Luis was the renewal of his DACA, a process that allowed him to continue working and living in the US. legally. The consulate’s assistance was invaluable in navigating this complex process.
With renewed DACA status and the knowledge gained through the consulate’s resources, Luis began hispath to entrepreneurship. The combination of his passion for gastronomy and consular support led him to open his own restaurant, “Sabores de Guatemala”, which quickly became a meeting point for the Guatemalan community and Latin food lovers.
“Sabores de Guatemala” is not just a restaurant; it is a testament to Luis’ hard work and commitment to excellence. Luis shares:
“Every dish we serve is filled with the history and heart of Guatemala. I want every customer, when tasting our food, to feel a piece of our home.”
A Bright Future
Luis’ story is one of many that highlight the vital role of consulates in supporting immigrants. From his arrival to the opening of his restaurant, Luis has shown that with determination, the right support and a supportive community, dreams can come true.
“Sabores de Guatemala” continues to thrive, and Luis now focuses on giving back to the community that has supported him, offering employment to other immigrants and participating in community events.
Her story is an inspiring example of how consular guidance and services can transform lives and help realize the American dream.
